These Volunteers Need Volunteers

Did you know the DFW / AMA is operated entirely by volunteers? Every event you attend; every email or newsletter you receive; every brochure or handout created; and even the analysis of the surveys you complete are all created and executed by marketing professionals who volunteer their time for the benefit of our Chapter.

To keep our Chapter growing, to strive to deliver value to our members and to continue to attract quality speakers and sponsors, the DFW / AMA needs your help. While there are opportunities in all areas, such as Membership, Programs, Communications and Collegiate Relations, there are immediate needs on the Volunteers, Public Relations and Non Profit SIG Committees.

Public Relations. If you want to write, learn more about social media, and the various online PR mediums, you would enjoy this committee.

Your position would consist of reviewing and possibly writing press releases, uploading on free wires, and uploading on local event calendars and social media vehicles.

Volunteers. If you like helping people feel valued and are good at building relationships, this committee might be of interest to you. Your position as a Volunteer Relationship Manager (VRM) would consist of contacting prospective volunteers, placing them in Chapter volunteer positions and serving as their contact throughout their volunteer tenure.

Non-Profit SIG. If you are employed or have working knowledge of a non- profit organization, your help is needed immediately to complete this dedicated team who works to deliver events that discuss marketing issues, resources and tools which are unique to non-profit organizations.

With over 14 years of marketing and advertising experience, Kelly has a proven track record of creating effective marketing solutions that guide companies into higher levels of exposure and increased profit. Kelly has spearheaded multi-million dollar marketing campaigns across corporate, film, television, sports and non-profit industries including Turner Broadcasting System(TNT/TBS/CNN/Cartoon Network), HBO, High Museum of Art and Spelman College Museum of Fine Art.

Selected as one of the 25 Most Influential Women in Atlanta by Rolling Out Magazine before relocating to Dallas, she is currently consulting with the Welborn McLean Group on social media, email marketing, events, partnerships and promotions.

Kelly has done a phenomenal job establishing the vision, setting the strategy, assembling and motivating a fantastic, talented team and developing an incredible line up of programs for the DFW AMA Multi-Cultural SIG. Her seemingly never ending supply of energy and enthusiasm is a joy to be around!

As the new Director of the DFW American Marketing Association Multi-Cultural SIG, Kelly Welborn has found relocating to the D/FW area from Atlanta this past summer to be a refreshing yet challenging experience. By February 8, 2010, all DFW AMA members should receive an email inviting you to vote for the revised DFW AMA Constitution and the officers for the 2010-2011 Board of Directors. It has taken over three years to update the 1989 Constitution and 1992 Bylaws to accurately reflect the ways we now manage the chapter, today’s technologies, and best practices, but at last it is ready for your review and vote!

We also offer what we believe is a very strong and capable slate of officers to lead the chapter in 2010-2011 (read bios at http://www.dfwama.com/Board/):

• President-Elect - Tom Dennis
• Secretary - Kristy Hoover
• Treasurer - Liz Martens

Why take the time to vote, especially with an uncontested slate? Because it’s YOUR chapter, and your privilege and responsibility as a member to elect leaders and vote on the chapter’s governing documents. Additionally:

1) According to the AMA’s rules and our Constitution, the membership must vote to approve any changes to the Constitution, with a majority of those voting required for adoption. Only the Board is required to approve Bylaws changes, which it has already done.

2) Voting keeps you engaged with your chapter, which is only as strong as those willing to commit to lead and be involved. Thanks to your suggestions and submissions of potential candidates, volunteering, and write-in candidate ballot option the Nominating Committee is aware of possible future leaders.

3) Your vote demonstrates support for candidates and the Board’s actions.

In January, the American Marketing Association International Headquarters announced a new membership program that will be available to groups of four or more. This new initiative is designed to boost membership and enhance value for the marketing community by offering a new membership category, Group Membership.

Studies showed that providing organizations with financial incentives and low-cost, easy access to professional development resources is likely to have a positive impact on the AMA’s membership acquisition and retention. Now that organizations have fewer resources available for in-house professional development, they are especially appreciative of the offerings of the American Marketing Association. With reduced costs, Group Membership rates encourage companies to join.

Erica Biery is an Account Manager for The BOSS Group, a specialized recruiting firm dedicated exclusively to the creative industry (MARCOM, Design, Interactive and PR). In her experience, partnering with a wide range of DFW organizations, she is able to keep up with marketing trends and industry standards. Erica has enjoyed getting involved in the DFW AMA and developing relationships with other MARCOM professionals. She is always interested in meeting new people and in learning more about innovative marketing tools. Throughout her career, Erica has had the opportunity to work with many companies from Fortune 100 to the non-profit sector covering almost every industry segment.

Erica hails from Chicago, Illinois. Although not a native Texan, she has lived in Dallas since graduating from Texas A&M University. There she earned her bachelors degree in Healthcare Administration and Marketing. In her free time she enjoys skiing, watching MadMen, playing golf, and is almost fearless when it comes to Mediterranean food! Erica is an active member of the Junior League of Dallas and devotes time to volunteering and supporting Parkland Hospital. She knows first-hand how the DFW AMA can help you develop your skills and meet some really amazing people.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, gain new skills, improve your resume, and mentor others. The DFW AMA is accepting volunteers in all areas, but new openings are now available on the following committees:

Telecom SIG

The Telecom SIG has an immediate opening for a director to develop strategy, lead the committee, and oversee event coordination for the SIG.

Small / Medium Business SIG

A variety of types of positions are available within each SIG to assist in coordinating quarterly events including: communications, securing venues, finding and coordinating speakers, catering management, event check-in, and identifying potential sponsors.

Public Relations / Community Outreach

Reach out to other community organizations and the media to both enhance the benefits to our members and the larger community, and to promote our events. Volunteers on this committee are actively involved in the organization’s social media efforts.

Membership

New Member Services and Retention Specialists welcome new members, recruit prospective members and encourage member retention by reinforcing member value. Membership volunteers must be active members to participate on this committee.

Volunteers

Volunteer Representatives visit with prospective volunteers to ensure successful volunteer placement, follow up with inactive volunteers and serve to provide a positive volunteer experience.

The best way to forge connections and benefit from the DFW AMA is through volunteering. Working with other marketing professionals will help you enhance your skills and establish strong, supportive relationships, along with giving you tremendous personal satisfaction. Summary: RadioShack is a 90 year old, iconic American brand that has grown from its humble roots in Boston, Massachusetts to a $4.3B retailer with more than 4,500 Company-operated stores in 50 states, and more than 200 Company-owned locations in Mexico. RadioShack historically held strong mindshare for innovative product development, including the first personal computer. In the past few decades, however, RadioShack struggled with its relevancy and its brand perception became one of obtuse parts and pieces, wires, and batteries. The truth, however, is that RadioShack is a robust business with an enviable balance sheet (more than $900M in cash) and a leadership position in innovative technologies, including mobility. More specifically, RadioShack is the nation's largest wireless retailer after the Carrier stores. The Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the American Marketing Association is always seeking members with new ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to lead the organization. As a Past President and the current Nominating Committee Chair for the chapter, I am encouraging you, as a chapter member, to deepen your connection with the DFW AMA by getting involved at the leadership level.

The DFW AMA is a completely volunteer-led organization, and only as strong as those willing to commit to lead. Past Board members will tell you that being a chapter leader has been one of the most fulfilling volunteer commitments they have made, both professionally and personally. In addition to enlarging your professional network within the Metroplex and nationally, DFW AMA Board participation will also offer you the chance to hone your leadership skills. Now is not the time to be shy, so let us know if you’re interested!

Any member may self-submit or recommend other candidates to the Nominating Committee. “The name of any eligible member may be proposed by a petition signed by two percent or ten members (whichever is greater) who are eligible to vote for that opening, properly submitted for a specific position.” (Collegiate members are ineligible to vote.) If you are interested in becoming a Board leader, please return the Nominations Form at www.dfwama.com by February 2, 2010.
