What is “experiential marketing”?

Marketing is promoting a brand or product. Experiential marketing is promoting a brand

or product through an experience.

Typically, the target audience is engaged face-to-face in an experience involving multiple

senses (sight, sound, smell, etc.), a live event or physical environment. Experiential

marketing can be directed at multiple audiences: employees, btob partners, customers and

consumers.

Is experiential marketing growing?

Traditional advertising is no longer as effective as it once was. Advertising Age in a recent

article cited a study from McKinsey & Company that reported by 2010 traditional

advertising will be 1/3 as effective as it was in 1990. Promo’s 2006 Industry Trend Report

confirms that 2005 annual spending on experiential marketing was at $171.8 billion,

a 3% increase from 2004.

Why is experiential marketing growing?

Marketers have always recognized the power of face-to-face events in motivating

and aligning their employees and business audiences to optimize performance and

increase sales. Increasingly, they also recognize that live events are a critical and often

unexploited means of engaging consumers that are harder than ever to reach through

traditional media.
